Megillah, Summer 2003
Men's Club News
For the most part, this year, the Men's Club has pretty
much operated behind the scenes.
We have continued with our long-standing commitment to fund half of the cost of the
cleaning and maintenance of the kitchen. We made this commitment years ago, when the
Men's Club was, itself, making major use of the kitchen through its programming and
its annual raffle. Even though we are no longer a major user of the kitchen, we have
continued to support the kitchen maintenance effort as a service to the congregation.
Years ago, the Men's Club adopted the congregational sound system as a project. As we
have found that there were needs associated with that system, we have met those needs;
and it is our intention to do so in the future. The circulating
videotape library is
also a continuing project of the Men's Club. The contents of that library are available,
without charge, to all members of the Nevey Shalom and Shaare Tikvah communities. We
expect to update the catalogue of the videotape library during the summer and to
publish a new catalogue in early Fall.
As we have in years past, this year, the Men's Club has worked with the congregational
Adult Education and Programs Committees by providing funds and assistance. An important
new group has appeared on the Nevey Shalom scene: a
Jewish preschool playgroup now
regularly meets in one of the synagogue classrooms. The Men's Club initially provided
the mothers who run that playgroup with a variety of supplies; and we have also
purchased two rugs and pads to cover the floor of that classroom. We have adopted
that playgroup as a Men's Club project and will support it on a continuing basis.
But, the time has come for the Nevey Shalom Men's Club to come out of the shadows.
For some time now, we have been looking for an appropriate entertainment opportunity
to sponsor. We have found the right program. On Sunday, June 8th, 2003, at 7:30pm,
the Men's Club will bring to Nevey Shalom a live concert featuring
clarinetist/saxophonist Eyal Bor, vocalist/guitarist Becky Gordon, and guitarist
Bruce Casteel. The program
will include Israeli, Hasidic, folk liturgical, and Jewish American music. There
will also be some sing-along with Becky and some classical hits. Following the
musical program will be a dessert reception. We have priced this program at $15.00
per ticket, a price that should enable any member of the Nevey Shalom and Shaare
Tikvah and friends communities to participate. View the
concert flyer for reservation details. If you miss
this concert, you'll regret it!
