Sisterhood Shabbat

~Linda Rosenberg, Chairperson, Jewish Family Living

The 2003 Sisterhood Shabbat was a truly beautiful and uplifting experience. For the first time in our history, we participated in Shabbat services on both Friday evening and Saturday morning. For the first time in our history, the service was led entirely by women. For the first time in our history, we celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat with another Sisterhood. It was our great pleasure to share this event with Shaare Tikvah Sisterhood -- a wonderful experience.

Shabbat began with a lovely Shabbat dinner organized by Ellen Weiss and catered by Elegant Edibles (Lynn Berk). Cantor Shula Resnick led the prayers during Shabbat dinner and the z'mirot following dinner.

Amy Sheldon and I organized both Shabbat services and were pleased that so many of our women agreed to participate. Women from both Sisterhoods recited Hebrew prayers and English readings, delivered Divrei Torah, acted as gabbayim, and read Torah and Haftorah.

Rita Dahut, Ellen Weiss, and Carol Halikman organized a beautiful Kiddush following services. We thank them for their efforts.

The entire event was lovely, and we look forward to doing it again jointly next year.

Sisterhood Presents Cinema Nevey

~Pauline Levine, Presidium

January 25, 2003, was really an evening to remember. That was our second "Cinema Nevey" presentation. The Frisco Kid, which hasn't been seen on the big screen for about 25 years, was the film of the evening. Gene Wilder was hilarious as the young Polish rabbi trying to get to San Francisco. A young Harrison Ford was the bank robber who befriends him and helps the rabbi get there. We had good laughs, enjoyed the background klezmer music, and those of us who knew some Yiddish got a kick out of understanding the occasional phrases sprinkled here and there in the movie.

It was obvious that we all thoroughly enjoyed the showing by the spirited conversation that went on around the refreshment tables. The blintz soufflé was delicious ... and if that wasn't enough, cake and cookies were also served. There was also a choice of coffee or a glazele tay. We had 35 very contented guests who said they would come again any time we had our next "Cinema Nevey".

Many thanks to everyone who worked to make it happen, including Bernice Cohen, who got the film for us, Mort Dubinsky, who took care of the TV showing, Ellen Weiss, for making the soufflé, and Theda Rosenblum, for pulling the whole thing together.

EXTRA! EXTRA! This is just in – the next "Cinema Nevey" is set for Saturday, April 5, 2003. The movie will be the "Al Jolson Story". Assorted pies and icecream will follow the movie. Watch for further details.
