Learning at Our Synagogue

Yiddish Is Alive and Well at Nevey!

Every Thursday, at 11:15am, for an hour or so, in the Shul library, the sounds of the Yiddish tongue come alive!

The walls reverberate with the sounds of mama lawshon in an informal setting – story-telling, songs, and participation by those who may thirst to hear the many facets of the rich language we have heard from mothers, fathers, bubbes, and zeides.

To many of us, it is a nostalgic trip to our past. Not to worry if our Yiddish is halting. We come to hear and to shmooz with friends and congregants of both shuls.

Come, and enjoy, and perhaps learn in a fun-filled hour, capped by pre-lunch refreshments. (Oh yes, it's free!)

Zeit alleh gezunt.

Hebrew Class

Our Conversational Hebrew Class meets each Tuesday evening from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. It is taught by Rabbi Resnick.

The class is learning Hebrew words and phrases as they are spoken in Israel today. The program runs through May 2003. If you are interested in joining, you can contact the Rabbi.

Torah Study

The Torah study group meets Thursday mornings at 9:30am. This group has met for a number of years. We welcome Shaare Tikvah members to our group, and Rabbi Resnick as our new teacher.

The session supposedly concentrates on the week's Torah portion. However, the discussion can quickly veer away from the actual Torah portion to a related – or an unrelated – topic. The derivation of a word, or the meaning of a phrase contained in the week's portion may be explained by Rabbi Resnick and argued by members of the group. The nicest part about this study is that, although some of the attendees are well-learned in Torah study, those of us who are not as learned feel welcome to attend and to express our opinions during the class.

The class is open to all who would like to attend – including members of both synagogues.

Still More Learning!

We cannot leave the subject of learning without mentioning two more things.

One is the informal teaching that Rabbi Resnick does in place of a sermon on Shabbat. With the help of Aviv, he brings a fresh approach to the week's Torah reading. There is a short interactive talk complete with questions and answers. We all look forward to Rabbi's remarks each week.

The second is the cooking classes sponsored by our Sisterhood. Those of us who have attended, have eaten our way through three delicious cooking lessons. We look forward to more!
