June

Men's Club Concert

On Sunday evening, June 13, 2004, at 7:30pm, the Men's Club will bring a live concert to Nevey Shalom. The return engagement will feature Dr. Eyal Bor, Becky Gordon, and Bruce Casteel. It will be comprised of Israeli, Hasidic, folk Liturgical, and Jewish American music. There will be some Classical hits, and there will be some sing-along with Becky. Sisterhood Appreciation Day

Join us for an afternoon showing our appreciation for our Sisterhood volunteers. A kosher Chinese luncheon will be served, and Cantor Kimberly Komrad will sing songs of our Jewish women in history. Our appreciation program will be held Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Nevey Shalom, starting at 1:30pm. One guest per member. Cost: $10 (member), $15 (guest). RSVP to the Synagogue by May 24, 2004.

Women's League International Day of Study

Come and join Nevey Shalom in study and celebration of the Book of Ruth, on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Nevey Shalom, starting at 6:00pm. Women's League commissioned the materials from three female scholars. The materials are outstanding and quite user-friendly. This project has generated a tremendous amount of enthusiasm around North America. Don't be left behind! Join your sisters as we combine our voices in celebration of our Biblical heroines and the holiday of Shavuot. RSVP to Linda Rosenberg or to the Synagogue by Monday, May 17, 2004. A fabulous dessert will be served afterwards.

An Evening with Pam Cooper

Learn about the mission of the Western Shore Conservancy and the important role it played (and is still playing) in saving Belt Woods, a National Natural Landmark located in Bowie. It is the last old growth forest on the Atlantic coastal plain, and it supports the highest density of nesting songbirds in North America. Also learn about the upcoming decisions your City Council members will be making that will affect Belt Woods. Pam Cooper, Executive Director for the Western Shore Conservancy, will speak. Afterwards, join in a discussion on "Repairing the Order of Creation: A Jewish Perspective on Environmental Ethics", an article written by Rabbi Lawrence Troster. Those who RSVP will receive a copy of the article. The program will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Nevey Shalom, starting at 7:45pm. RSVP Helene Merkel by May 12, 2004. Sisterhood Rosh Hodesh Study Group

Nevey Shalom Sisterhood invites you to participate in the Rosh Hodesh Women's Study Group, Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at 7:45pm. Celebrate Rosh Hodesh Iyar with us as we learn about the meaning and traditions of this women's holiday. Join us for study and discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Adult Education Program: Rabbi Tropper Lectures

On Sunday, March 21, 2004, Rabbi Tropper from New York will visit us and present us with two short lectures, followed by a question and answer discussion. The lectures planned are:

  • 10:30am: Death, and Then What?
  • 11:30am: Psychology, a Dangerous Cult of Self-Worship

We hope you will attend and bring many friends. Light refreshments will be served.


Men's Club Shabbat

For the past two years, the Men's Club, in conjunction with Shaare Tikvah, has conducted special Men's Club Shabbat Services. The Men set up and serve a Shabbat dinner the evening before, and lead Shabbat services both in the evening and the morning. This has been a fun event that has been well-attended.

The next Men's Club Shabbat is scheduled for Friday - Saturday, March 19 - 20, 2004, 6:00pm. Shabbat dinner will consist of roast beef, potatoes, string beans, salad, with soft drinks and dessert. Cost is $18 per adult, $9 for children 12 and under, with a $50 maximum per household. Vegetarian options are available upon request. RSVP to Ed Halikman by Tuesday, March 16, 2004.


Spaghetti Dinner and Baffle Bowl

The Men's Club of Nevey Shalom has been pleased to join with Shaare Tikvah in the latter's annual Spaghetti Dinner and Baffle Bowl, in which the Men's Clubs compete with the Sisterhoods in a test of knowledge. This year's Dinner and Bowl is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2004, 5:00pm. Dinner will consist of spaghetti in meat sauce and other accompaniments. Cost is $10 per adult, $5 for children 12 and under. All proceeds go to Torah Fund. RSVP to Andy Sheldon.


Adult Education: ABCs of the Jewish Community

Come join us on Sunday, March 14, 2004, 2:00pm, for a very informative and exciting program about the "ABCs of our Jewish Community". This program will update our understanding of and focus on many of the current Jewish services and activities that are available to us.

A speaker from the Jewish Information and Referral Service of the Jewish Federation will be here to provide information on how we can enhance our quality of Jewish life. This informative program will raise our awareness of the many Jewish resources that are available to us and answer any questions you may have about these services.

The program is open to all. RSVP to the office by Sunday, March 7, 2004, so we can have a head count. There is no admission charge. Refreshments will be served.

Sisterhood Soup Sale

Ellen is making mushroom barley soup. You may purchase this for $5 per quart. Send payment to the office, payable to Nevey Shalom Sisterhood, c/o Theda Rosenblum. Deadline: February 15, 2004. Soup may be picked up on February 23, 2004, 9:30am - 11:00am.


Men's Club World Wide Wrap

The Shaare Tikvah Men's Club & Nevey Shalom Men's Club jointly invite men, women, teens, and students to put on tefillin at the fourth World Wide Wrap, Sunday, February 1, 2004 in the Nevey Shalom Classroom 3. School and tefillin instruction begin at 9:30am. Sunday morning service starts at 9:45am. Plus, there will be a breakfast for adults and teens at 10:15am.

Cooking Workshop: Vegetarian Lasagna

Sunday, January 25, 2004, 11:30am, in the Nevey Shalom kitchen.

Join chef Sandy Kopta (back by popular demand), who will demonstrate how to make a wonderful cheeseless vegetarian lasagna.

Sisterhood Shabbat

You are cordially invited to attend the Nevey Shalom and Shaare Tikvah Sisterhoods' Annual Family Shabbat Dinner to be held on Friday, January 9, 2004, at 6:30pm. Services will be conducted by the women of both Sisterhoods, on both Friday evening (after dinner, around 8:00pm) and Saturday morning. A light kiddush will follow services Saturday morning.

Cost for dinner is $20 for adults and children 13 and over, and $10 for children under 13. Reservations for dinner are required by December 29, 2003, and will will be accepted by check only and must be received by December 29, 2003. We will be unable to honor any reservations after that date. No one will be admitted at the door without a reservation.

Nevey Shalom members: make a check payable to Nevey Shalom Sisterhood, and mail to the office c/o Theda Rosenblum.

Shaare Tikvah members: make a check payable to Shaare Tikvah Sisterhood, and mail to Amy Sheldon.

Hanukah Dinner

On Sunday, December 21, 2003, 5:00pm, at Nevey Shalom, there will be a delicious dinner featuring Howie's latkes, great entertainment, songs, and fun. Come eat and show off your favorite menorah. Cost is $8 for adults and children 13 and over, and $5 for children 12 and under.

Hanukah Program

Join us on Tuesday, December 16, 2003, 7:00pm at the Bowie Library meeting room to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

The program is designed for people and kids of all ages. There will be songs, games, stories, dancing, and plenty of gelt. Children will take home song sheets, foldable dreidel, and chocolate gelt.

On Sunday, November 23, 2003, 10:30am, at Nevey Shalom, Benjamin Fass, President, Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Washington, will speak on Jewish genealogy. A light breakfast will be served.

Nevey Shalom Sisterhood and Bowie Hadassah present a film, Jewish Life of Washington, DC, followed by a discussion, on Wednesday, November 19, 2003, 7:45pm, at Nevey Shalom. Light refreshments will be served.

Sisterhood Paid-up Membership Program

The Nevey Shalom Sisterhood and Shaare Tikvah Sisterhood invite you to a Paid-Up Membership evening at Nevey Shalom, Sunday, October 25, 2003, 4:45pm, featuring Beryl L. Benderly, a prize-winning freelance author, journalist, and lecturer. She will talk about the "History of Jewish Women in America".

Adult Education: Gerald Shur

Please join us on Wednesday, October 22, 2003, 7:00pm, at Nevey Shalom, to hear Gerald Shur (a resident of Bowie and a former member of Nevey Shalom) speak about organized crime, organized crime intelligence, and computerized intelligence systems. As the founder of the Federal Witness Security Program, Mr. Shur is the recognized expert in the United States in the development, operation, and management of Witness Security Programs. Mr. Shur is also the co-author of WITSEC: Inside the Federal Witness Protection Program.

Sukkot Lunch and Learn

Saturday, October 11, 2003. The program is sponsored by the Nevey Shalom Sisterhood.

Rabbi Reuven Resnick will lead a discussion after lunch, which will be held after services and kiddush in the sukkah. He will speak about the "Jewish Messiah Over the Ages".

Sisterhood Soup Sale

Our gourmet cook, Ellen Weiss, will once again have her delicious soup for sale. You will have it ready to serve your guests for the Holidays. This time the soup is Chicken Vegetable Soup, sold in one-quart containers at $5 per quart.
